Ray’s Lounge & Catering

Location: 2070 Clinton Street Buffalo, NY

Phone:716 824 3227

Price: $  12.99

Batter fried, breaded or broiled with choice of
potato, coleslaw, macaroni salad, & Potato Salad  Rye Bread

Ambiance: This is a blast from the past.  The restaurant is in a older building in Kasiertown in South Buffalo.  It must also be used as a banquet hall.  On Fridays they have a Seafood buffet and their Friday Fish Fry.  We had the Fish Fry, but did look at the buffet.  We arrived after 7 and there were only a few people in the restaurant.  They do stop serving at 8pm  The restaurant had hard wood floors that I think doubled as a dance floor.  It was clean and family run.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.

Food: The fish was just ok.  It was not particularly crispy.  The salads were very good and tasted as though they were home made.  We liked the traditional thicker sliced rye bread.  Our soda's were flat and not good.  We did ask the waitress about this and she told us they were having trouble with their machine.  I switched to water.  I was disappointed that she did not say something and just served them to us without any warning since they knew they had a problem.

Recommendation: I would  not recommend this fish fry to others and I  probably would return again.

Hurliman’s Pub

Location: 2460 Clinton Street,  West Seneca, NY

Phone:   716 725-0333

Price: $  9.25  (But tonight the waitress came to tell us that our meals would be buy one get the second at 1/2 price. )  She said that next week they would be offering a coupon in the newspaper, but they are excited to be offering fish fry's again that they were giving everyone this special today!

Beer battered or breaded fish with choice of
french fries, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad  & rye bread & butter

Ambiance: This is a old building on a busy road.  We entered through the bar area, there was music playing and a few people at the bar.  We went to the back were the restaurant was and it was 1950's circa.  It appeared that this was once a dance hall, with wooded floors and 3/4 high wide board wood panels.  The walls were  filled with old black and white family photos.    I asked the waitress to tell me about the restaurant.  She said her brothers own it and it's been in the family since 1968.  There were children there helping clear tables and were quite delightful and hard working.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.  Our waitress was very good, she took our orders and there was not too long a wait for our food.

Food: The fish was satisfactory, not as crisp as I like but was good.  The french fries were hot and crispy.  The rye bread was served before our meal and was very fresh.   The side salads of Macaroni & Potato were home made and good.  They were out of Cole Slaw on this night, but we were later than usual so maybe they had a rush earlier.

Rating: 4  fins

Recommendation: I would recommend this restaurant.

Flappy’s Greyside Grille

Location: 5700 Seneca & Transit Roads  West Seneca NY

Phone: 716-674-5300

Price: $  9.99

Batter fried, breaded or broiled with choice of
potato, coleslaw, tartar sauce & rye bread & butter

Ambiance: Upon entering Flappys you are greeted by a friendly hostess, lively music and a high energy restaurant.  The decor is pleasing and fun.  We went to the bar while waiting for our table and the bar staff was quick to take our orders and our wait was pleasant.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.  Our waitress was very good, she took our orders and there was not too long a wait for our food.

Food: The fish was Outstanding, very crisp and tender and moist.  The Fries were homemade and very good.  We were pleased that a slice of rye bread was included.    My only disappointment was that the only side we had was cole slaw.  The typical Buffalo Fish fry should have potato and macaroni salads too.

Recommendation: I would recommend this fish fry to others and I would return again.

Pearl Street Grill

Location: 76 Pearl Street Buffalo NY

Phone: 716-856-2337

Price: $  9.49

Ambiance: Pearl Street is a unique and wonderful restaurant, the building is a old factory type downtown building and has a lot of character.  They accepted reservations which is unusual for a Friday Fish Fry in Buffalo.  This is a large building with lots of seating and has a wonderful atmosphere.

Service: The service was very good.  Our waitress knew all the beer choices for the evening and was also able to let us know about some new items not on the menu.  After taking our orders she visited our table often enough to take care of refills or any other needs we might have.

Food: At first I was disappointed when our fish fry was delivered to our table because we the platter did not have rye bread or a macaroni or potato salad.  Our french fries were not the typical french fries but were a very crispy steak fry and were very good.  The Fish was battered in their own light house ale batter and was very crispy and excellent.

Rating: 3.5 fins ( only because of missing the salads and bread)
