Sorrentino’s East Aurora NY

Location: 142 Grey Street, East Aurora, NY  14052

Phone:716 655- 4646

Price: $  12.99

Ambiance: Sorrentino's is a local Italian restaurant.   It was decorated in Buffalo theme sports theme.  There were also lots of family photo's on the walls.  The Booths were made too like like a patio with a canopy over them.  There were also tables throughout the restaurant.  It was bright and clean.

Service: When we arrived our neighbors were there enjoying their dinner and they introduced us to their waitress.  They are regulars they were so happy to make sure that we were welcomed.  The waitress who showed us to our table asked if we minded a table in the back, which was fine by us.  The table was a bit odd  as it was at the end of the row of booth but we were very comfortable there.

Food: We ordered Diet Soda and it was great.  After last weeks experience with soda at a different restaurant.  We both ordered the Friday Fish Fry.  When it was served it was HUGE.  We had one and a half pieces of fish, macaroni salad, Rye Bread and cole slaw.  There was so much food that I took it home and had it the following day.  The Macaroni salad tasted homemade and was very good.  The coleslaw was excellent too.  The fish was crispy on the outside but very moist and tender on the inside.

Recommendation: I would highly recommend this location for a Fish Fry and I would return again.

Eckl’s Restaurant – Orchard Park

Location: 4936 Ellicott Road, Orchard Park, NY  14127

Phone:716 662-2262

Price: $  14.99

Ambiance: This is a old  family run restaurant with two dinning rooms located on opposite sides of the building. There is also a bar area in between and that includes a few cocktail tables.  This restaurant is located on the village edge of Orchard Park and  the decor is very very dark and old and quite outdated.  The room that we sat in was overcrowded with tables that were too close together.  The result was that we sat at a table with 4 chairs but in reality would only fit 2 people and not very comfortably at that.  We were so close together that it was impossible not to over hear everything that was said at the neighboring tables.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.  We were greeted upon entering and were seating right away.   Our hostess took our drink orders and the waitress was quick to take our orders too.

Food: We ordered soft drinks and they arrived quickly but we were so disappointed when we realized that the soda was FLAT.  I told the waitress about the beverages and her response was....."all our customers keep telling me that."  I asked her if she received regular complaints then wouldn't she think there was something wrong?  Her follow up was, "We tell Mr. Eckl this all the time, but he told us it's fine, and that we just need to tell the customers that this is  fountain beverage and that is to be expected.  Mr. Eckl, I am sorry to tell you that you are not correct.  I think you should check out your equipment and adjust the CO2 levels.

Rye bread was served at the table and it was fresh and good.

I was also very disappointed with our fish, it appears not to be "fresh" and looks as though it came from a pre-prepared frozen box.  It was not crispy, and tasted just OK.      The fries were the best part of the dinner and they were crisp, the coleslaw was also good.  There was no potato salad or macaroni salad, and for 14.99 I would think for sure this meal would have been served with the traditional sides.

Rating: 1  fin

Recommendation: I would NOT recommend going to Eckl's Restaurant for a fish fry.  I hear they have many great options on their menu, but the Friday Fish Fry is NOT one of them.

MacKenzies

Location: 4151 LakeShore Road.  Hamburg, NY  14075

Phone:716 627-6792

Price: $  9.99

Ambiance: This is a quaint family run restaurant with two dinning rooms separated by a mid size bar area.  The view of Lake Erie is delightful and watching the sun set is a nice bonus.  The decor is very well done and comfortable.  The general "feel" of the restaurant is inviting.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.  We arrived at about  7:30 and had about a 20 minute wait.  This wait time is about average for most places we have gone.    We went to the bar and enjoyed a drink at a nice bistro table with a great view of the lake.   Our waitress was friendly and took our orders efficiently.  She told us about the specials and highlights of the menu.

Food: We were offered bread and butter while we waited for our dinner.  At this time we knew we would not be having the traditional slice of Rye bread with our fish.    Our meals arrived very quickly.  I chose to have seasoned fries and my husband had regular fries.  Our fish look like it was breaded to be but when I cut into I realized it was battered.  It was very crispy, moist and very very tender.  It was excellent.    The fries were very hot and crispy too.  We had coleslaw and it was very good.  There was no potato salad or macaroni salad.

Recommendation: I would recommend going to MacKenzies for a fish fry.

Ilio DiPaolo’s

Location: 3785 South Park Ave.  Blasdell, NY

Phone:716 825-3575

Price: $  9.99

Ambiance: A nice Italian restaurant in Blasdell.  The decor is qaint, the dinning room is split into two sections and not too large.  The patons are  older and it's a relaxing atmosphere.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.  We arrived at about  8:30 and had about a 20 minute wait.  We went to the bar and enjoyed a drink at the large comfortable bar.  Our waitress was perky and took our orders efficiently.

Food: The fish was just ok, it was breaded and there was not a option to have it beer battered.  The fish was tasty, moist and very good, I just did not enjoy the breading because it's not crispy.  They served coleslaw and Macaroni salad.  I thought they were bland, but my husband liked them very much.    The traditional rye bread was not served, but they did have Italian bread served while we waited for our dinners.  I guess that is typical of a Italian restaurant vs. the typical Buffalo Friday Fish Fry.

Rating: 3 -1/2 fins

Recommendation: I would recommend this fish fry but would warn that they only offer the fish breaded or broiled.
