Buffalo Fish Fry Reviewing any diner, dive, or restaurant that serves fish fry's.

Wallenwein’s Hotel, East Aurora NY

Location: 641 Oakwood Ave, East Aurora NY 14052

Phone:  716-652-9801

Price: $  9.99

Ambiance: Wallenweins is located in the Village of East Aurora in a Century old building and they have added a large front porch for outside dining with a roof over head.  The night we were there was a beautiful Buffalo night and there was no seating available outside so we ate inside.  We were a bit disappointed that they did not have any air condition on but there was plenty of seats available.    The decorations inside the restaurant have a sports theme, including turf from the Buffalo Bills Stadium.  The building is old but claims it's own charm because of it's historic value.

Service: We did not have to wait for seating inside and the waitress was quick to take our orders.  Our waitress took good care of us, she was efficient but not overly  friendly.  Although it took quite a while for our food to arrive at our table, it was very hot and worth the wait.

Food: We both ordered the Beer Battered Fish Fry with French fries.  It was served with a slice of Rye bread, coleslaw, macaroni salad and french fries.  The salad were very good and it was nice to have the slice of Rye bread served with our meal.  The Macaroni salad was very good as well and our fish was excellent, it was very hot, very crispy, the fish was tender and tasty.  The batter used for the fish was particularly flavorful.  I don't know what beer they used but the flavor came through very well.

Recommendation: I would recommend Wallenwein's for a fish fry, it very good and the location is fun

Fontana’s Ogden Bar & Grill

Location: William Street, Buffalo NY

Price: $  12.99

Ambiance: Fontana's is located at the same site as the "old" Billy Ogdens.  This is a older family run Italian restaurant with a decor reminiscent of  the 1960's .  When you  enter there is a  good size bar,  although there were few people there.   The dinning room was off to the side of the bar and it was a typical Italian restaurant with the red and while checkered tablecloths.  We arrived quite early at 5:30 and there was no wait time to get a table.

Service: Our waiter was a young man who   attempted to make a few jokes. while taking our orders.    Our drink order were taken promptly and we placed our orders quickly.  Tonight we were enjoying dinner out with friends and the restaurant was easy to have a conversation without excess noise.

Food: We ordered battered fish fry's and  one of our friend had broiled.  The fish was served  on very large printed plates.  This was unique to any of the fish frys that we have had so far.  Our Fish was very good;  tender, fresh, crispy and tasty.  The macaroni salad was different that I have ever had before.  I am not sure what the unique flavor was but I really enjoyed it but my husband did not like it at all.  Rye bread was not a option but we were offered a nice basket of fresh Italian bread.   The cole slaw was good too.

Recommendation: I would return to this restaurant and I would recommend this place for a fish fry.

Sorrentino’s East Aurora NY

Location: 142 Grey Street, East Aurora, NY  14052

Phone:716 655- 4646

Price: $  12.99

Ambiance: Sorrentino's is a local Italian restaurant.   It was decorated in Buffalo theme sports theme.  There were also lots of family photo's on the walls.  The Booths were made too like like a patio with a canopy over them.  There were also tables throughout the restaurant.  It was bright and clean.

Service: When we arrived our neighbors were there enjoying their dinner and they introduced us to their waitress.  They are regulars they were so happy to make sure that we were welcomed.  The waitress who showed us to our table asked if we minded a table in the back, which was fine by us.  The table was a bit odd  as it was at the end of the row of booth but we were very comfortable there.

Food: We ordered Diet Soda and it was great.  After last weeks experience with soda at a different restaurant.  We both ordered the Friday Fish Fry.  When it was served it was HUGE.  We had one and a half pieces of fish, macaroni salad, Rye Bread and cole slaw.  There was so much food that I took it home and had it the following day.  The Macaroni salad tasted homemade and was very good.  The coleslaw was excellent too.  The fish was crispy on the outside but very moist and tender on the inside.

Recommendation: I would highly recommend this location for a Fish Fry and I would return again.

Location: 4151 LakeShore Road.  Hamburg, NY  14075

Phone:716 627-6792

Price: $  9.99

Ambiance: This is a quaint family run restaurant with two dinning rooms separated by a mid size bar area.  The view of Lake Erie is delightful and watching the sun set is a nice bonus.  The decor is very well done and comfortable.  The general "feel" of the restaurant is inviting.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.  We arrived at about  7:30 and had about a 20 minute wait.  This wait time is about average for most places we have gone.    We went to the bar and enjoyed a drink at a nice bistro table with a great view of the lake.   Our waitress was friendly and took our orders efficiently.  She told us about the specials and highlights of the menu.

Food: We were offered bread and butter while we waited for our dinner.  At this time we knew we would not be having the traditional slice of Rye bread with our fish.    Our meals arrived very quickly.  I chose to have seasoned fries and my husband had regular fries.  Our fish look like it was breaded to be but when I cut into I realized it was battered.  It was very crispy, moist and very very tender.  It was excellent.    The fries were very hot and crispy too.  We had coleslaw and it was very good.  There was no potato salad or macaroni salad.

Recommendation: I would recommend going to MacKenzies for a fish fry.

Hurliman’s Pub

Location: 2460 Clinton Street,  West Seneca, NY

Phone:   716 725-0333

Price: $  9.25  (But tonight the waitress came to tell us that our meals would be buy one get the second at 1/2 price. )  She said that next week they would be offering a coupon in the newspaper, but they are excited to be offering fish fry's again that they were giving everyone this special today!

Beer battered or breaded fish with choice of
french fries, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad  & rye bread & butter

Ambiance: This is a old building on a busy road.  We entered through the bar area, there was music playing and a few people at the bar.  We went to the back were the restaurant was and it was 1950's circa.  It appeared that this was once a dance hall, with wooded floors and 3/4 high wide board wood panels.  The walls were  filled with old black and white family photos.    I asked the waitress to tell me about the restaurant.  She said her brothers own it and it's been in the family since 1968.  There were children there helping clear tables and were quite delightful and hard working.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.  Our waitress was very good, she took our orders and there was not too long a wait for our food.

Food: The fish was satisfactory, not as crisp as I like but was good.  The french fries were hot and crispy.  The rye bread was served before our meal and was very fresh.   The side salads of Macaroni & Potato were home made and good.  They were out of Cole Slaw on this night, but we were later than usual so maybe they had a rush earlier.

Recommendation: I would recommend this restaurant.

Ambiance: Upon entering Flappys you are greeted by a friendly hostess, lively music and a high energy restaurant.  The decor is pleasing and fun.  We went to the bar while waiting for our table and the bar staff was quick to take our orders and our wait was pleasant.

Service: The service was prompt and friendly.  Our waitress was very good, she took our orders and there was not too long a wait for our food.

Food: The fish was Outstanding, very crisp and tender and moist.  The Fries were homemade and very good.  We were pleased that a slice of rye bread was included.    My only disappointment was that the only side we had was cole slaw.  The typical Buffalo Fish fry should have potato and macaroni salads too.
